The scope of work comprised of the demolition of the former nurse’s home at South Tyneside District Hospital.
The former building was demolished to make way for the new £10m diagnostic hub. The new hub will have brand new MRI and CT scanning equipment - along with a PET-CT scanner, which will be used to diagnose cancer - and means patients who would otherwise have to travel to Newcastle or Middlesbrough for diagnoses will be able to stay closer to home.
The existing site was a busy live working hospital with both staff and patients. Segregation of the demolition works from the rest of the site was paramount and securing the site from unauthorised personnel. The existing building contained asbestos; a specialised Asbestos Removal Company was appointed. The demolition of the building needed to be carefully planned into phases to ensure it was carried out in a safe manner. Due to the nature of the project, a lot of dust was created. Methods to control the amount of dust had to be carefully selected to protect those on site, visitors and the environment.
